On Carson's actual birthday (August 13th), we had family over for a pretty informal cake and singing party. Carson had just celebrated his cousin Collin's 16th birthday a few days before, and he kept singing to Collin and correcting everyone to say Collin's name. It was pretty cute.
I always left a clear opportunity for him to dive into cake with his bare hands and go crazy, and for the second time he made it very apparent that he doesn't like to be messy. He asked for a fork. He did like the cake though. "Ummmm...CAKE"!
We planned an outside birthday party for him and invited a smaller guest list than his first birthday...but when it was all said and done there were still 25 people there. I will openly admit that this is too many people for a 2 year old--and he did get a little overwhelmed with everyone at times. It is just so hard NOT to have so many people there who are close with us and want to take part in the celebration. We are so blessed to have such great people in our lives.This year, I wanted to theme the party after the "Yo Gabba Gabba" TV show since that is the show that Carson loves. Johnny even volunteered to make a Brobee cake, and it turned out so great! It was just amazing:

Crystal is holding Ayrica's little one named Grant--and she looks like such a natural! Now that she and Chad live only 2 blocks away, I would place bets that we hear the pitter-patter of little feet very soon :)
We planned to create a space where the adults could chill out and talk within a close proximity to the kids playing with scooters, bikes, and Carson's new Jeep in the culd-de-sac. We also wanted to set up a slip-n-slide in the front yard. It worked out great, and there was so much more space than if we had just used the backyard for the party. Of course this was nothing new to the neighbors--we hang out in the front yard with them all the time!
We did set up the slip-n-slide after we had cake. Carson was pretty reluctant at first to try it out, but once a few of the older kids did it he wanted to as well...(Thanks Brady and Noah!) Kava was just drinking the water at the bottom and trying to avoid kids sliding into him. :)
The slip-n-slide was a hit. Carson and Hannah had a good laugh--
and Carson belly-laughed for awhile as he cautiously would sit down and scoot on the plastic--it wasn't really "sliding" for him. Whatever works!
Carson got some really nice presents from everybody. In this picture, Grandma is reading him a book that he got from Sarina and Cisco. He stayed in close proximity to both of his grandmas during the party. He has pretty amazing connections with all of his grandparents, which is a really lucky thing.
We all sang Happy Birthday, and he was a little overwhelmed...he clapped at the end and said "thank you" and then "thank you, Daddy". Brody and Elaina helped him blow out the candle. He talked about this moment for days afterwards--mentioning the cake and "singing to Carson". Even a few months later, he sometimes brings up his party when we sang to him. :)
All in all, it was a great day, and a very memorable birthday celebration for Mike, Carson, and myself. We are still sometimes overwhelmed with gratitude at the chance that we have been given to have our child--and we haven't forgotten the hard road that we traveled to get to this point.

We couldn't resist--he loves to "drive, drive, drive" cars, and this is one of the toys that I REALLY wish we had when I was growing up. He is a little young to actually drive it all over the place, but he loves to sit in it and pretend to drive right now.
